Deborah sits on the concrete staircase at the center of the house. Doubling as an extension of the kitchen, it encases a stove, a refrigerator, and storage space. “These stairs for me are like sculpture that you can use,” says the Venezuelan-born artist. “They’re a cross between art and functionality.”

The exterior of the yoga and art studio is defined by a slatted Douglas fir screen that controls the afternoon light.

The end walls of the home strengthen the structural layout of the plan while also providing privacy from nearby neighbors. Pine timber slats wrap the exterior of the home, tying in with the natural elements.

The entire property is less than 450 square feet, but feels much larger thanks to careful planning.
