Before Ester Bruzkus Architekten transformed the top-floor apartment into a cozy home for a Berlin couple, the empty apartment had floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides and exposed concrete walls on the other sides. Rather than create a series of conventional rooms that would close off the sense of openness, a single millwork box was positioned away from the walls to make rooms between it and the existing walls.

The primary suite includes a richly hued, wood-paneled bath, complete with a cozy fireplace, soaking tub, and leaded-glass windows.

The long, narrow corridor that accesses each of the rooms steps down, marking the transition from the upper-level master bedroom to the public areas, which are located on the house’s lower level.

Doors flank the main seating area of the living space. The owners purchased the Heywood Wakefield chairs from Strictly Hey-Wake in Hagerstown, Maryland near the wife’s childhood home. “I’d always wanted Heywood Wakefield furniture, and it fits in really well here,” she says.

Set behind the couple’s Silver Lake home, the two-story structure has a crisp white board–and–batten exterior.

Moody blue walls in one of the upstairs bedrooms creates a quiet retreat from the light-filled spaces below.
