Walnut cabinetry with a custom finger-pull treatment, a close collaboration with local designer John Deitrich at Plum Projects, now wraps the kitchen perimeter.

The kitchen coffee bar was a must-have for Joel. The bright white subway tile backsplash and the white cabinetry give the skoolie a fresh, open feeling.

The six-burner La Cornue stove provided visual inspiration for the eclectic, vintage finishes throughout the rest of the home.

Bespoke inbuilt solutions, such as the cut-out cabinetry knobs, enhance the minimalist flair.

The new kitchen features ceiling-to-countertop tiles in a grid pattern, which reappears throughout the home. The globe flush mount overhead is from Anthropologie, while the hardware is from Altas Homewares and Alno Hardware.

Built in 1948, the two-bedroom Stuart Bailey House was designed by Richard Neutra and is currently one of two residences on the Sam Simon Estate in Pacific Palisades property which recently sold for $14.9M. Neutra’s Case Study was designed with a classic midcentury open layout and features large, floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors. It was the only Case Study designed by Neutra which was actually built.

The front elevation of the home remained modest in appearance with a simple vertical addition, maintaining the typical Austin bungalow aesthetic.

A rough board-formed concrete wall hems in the courtyard garden creating an organic looking transition to the wild scrub oak beyond.

Gawthrop, an avid hang-glider who is a member of the U.S. Soaring Team, wanted the home to evoke flight; the standing-seam roof from Metal Sale is held up by wire struts to resemble a plane’s wing. In the foreground is the rock formation designer Alan Nicholson had excavated.

Wildlife are frequent visitors here, but the area’s active woodpeckers aren’t very welcome, so the house is clad in corrugated metal siding by Recla Metals.

Through the efforts of L.A. interior designer Tracy Beckmann and her partner, furniture designer Ryan Trowbridge, you can experience the glamorous Lautner spell that has entranced Hollywood at The Lautner—the only existing John Lautner building that you can actually spend the night in.

Benjamin Moore’s Tomato Red provides “punctuation” to the exterior. “That was the cheapest way to have that hot spark of color,” Pirman explains.
