A single window seldom steals the show of an architectural project, but very few share a view like the one in the living area of Neil and Laura Stephens’ home, Taigh Créadha, in the village of Achnacloich. The roughly ten-by-six-foot window on the gable end of the softly-hued minimalist home looks out over Scotland’s rugged Isle of Skye coast and out to the Cuillin mountain range.

The architect couple, who both work at Dualchas, the Skye-based practice that Neil founded with his twin, Alasdair, had spotted the land for sale back in 2014. Neil had been looking at the property for one of their clients, but Laura suggested they purchase it themselves for their own family home. “I said it was too expensive, but Laura said we’d find a way,” says Neil. “It took a while to sell our other property and get the planning agreement, but we finished the building in 2022. We’re still completing the landscaping and some work outside.”

Neil and Laura collaborated on the home, with both agreeing that the views from the site were so special that visitors would need to work for them. Instead of entirely glazing the coast-facing end of the house and leaving it open to the entrance, dining area, and kitchen, they instead hid the scenery and a sitting area behind a half-wall with a woodburning fireplace and built-in bench. “The idea is that you’ve got a view and you try and conceal it. Eventually it’s revealed, so you create an element of surprise,” says Neil. “Then we’ve just got a picture window at the end, which is a lot like a landscape painting.”

The spectacular soft light of Inner Hebrides, off the northwestern Scottish mainland, provides the painterly quality to this view. The gallery-like effect is augmented by the bucolic yet ever-active backdrop, where you can expect to see cameos from the Stephens’ nine Hebridean sheep, horse, and Norwegian forest cat. The family menagerie also includes a whippet, a sausage dog, and two miniature dachshunds.

It takes a while for a visitor to weave through the house to the framed view, as the inside is just as fascinating. For a start, there is not a lick of paint or piece of structural steel in the chapel-like interior, with plastered clay block walls subtly contrasting a terrazzo floor made of gravel from a nearby quarry. “I want the materials to speak for themselves, to be true to themselves,” says Laura. “What you see is doing its job. You’re not hiding anything, which is difficult to do with minimalism or simplicity. I was trying to keep a simple palette of materials, but letting them bring their own warmth, their own patina.”

The lack of paint is not merely down to aesthetics or budget; the couple also wanted to avoid the possibility of off-gassing from paints or plasterboard having an impact on their 13-year-old son and two daughters, who are seven and just shy of two. The natural results seem to have won the approval of the indoor animals, who can occasionally be found licking minerals from the walls. This experiment in chemical-free construction has also piqued the interest of clients, who previously worried about costs or practicalities. The Stephens can now speak from lived experience, and invite them over to see the materials in situ.

With the project having an architect couple as both clients and designers there were bound to be strong opinions as to how things should be done. But years of working together on other people’s homes gave Neil and Laura a shared language and understanding of process. So Neil got his way on the pitched roof over Laura’s idea for a flat one, which would have simplified the placing of rooms. Laura, in turn, won out on the plan to prioritize social space in Taigh Créadha.

“At two-hundred square meters [2,152 square feet], it’s a big house, and most of it is social, shared space. The kitchen, the hearth area, is great,” she says. “We have big dinners with friends and family, and the kids come and go.”

The house sits comfortably in the landscape, mirroring agricultural buildings close to the seven-acre site, fitting in with vernacular Skye architecture and being partially hidden from view on approach due to the rolling landscape. Just as the house melds with its surroundings, so the Stephens have become embedded in the local community and the various members of the family can be seen riding, walking, biking, sailing, or playing shinty, a Highlands variant of field hockey. Neil is also chair of the local Gaelic-speaking nursery and has just found himself another architectural project, albeit a voluntary one.

“I joined the local community hall committee, and I’ve been tasked with finding an architect to put together a team to renovate it,” he says. “When you live in a place like this, you have to be involved in community activity, because that’s how you get to know folks and how things happen.”

The architect in question would be well-advised to visit the Stephens at home to witness how a space that brings people together could look. The shifting light that moves with the seasons enhances the feeling of Taigh Créadha as calming secular temple, while the views across the bay remind the residents why this is just the spot to be.
