After renting several holiday houses in the area, Matt knew the fireplace was a must in this region. The Stuv 6 freestanding fireplace from Oblica subtly delineates the dining and living areas.

Arriving at the cabin is now a joyous ritual. “Every time we push the gates back and see the view it’s this sense of ‘we’ve arrived’,” Matt says.

“That swoop was my least favorite thing about the house,” admits Fred. “I was looking forward to an angular, Craftsman-type thing. But I said, I’m going to trust Kristin.”

“I didn’t know sheet rock was so expensive until it was done,” laughs Janette. “Apparently we really splurged on the sheet rock.”

Originally the plans called for a fully circular staircase, but the tight spiral was uncomfortable to navigate. Instead, Patnaik split the difference, installing folded wood steps as the first half of the staircase, leading to a platform that then transitions to the spiral.

The exterior's charred timber, recycled brick and concrete finishes echo the honest, hardworking materials of Esperance's farm buildings.

An arched alcove was also created for the desk.

Many of the apartment’s motifs come together here, including the circular detail in the closet door, which is also found in a main room and repeated in the hardware, and the fluted glass. Custom arched mirrors hang on the wall.
