The home’s 2,340 square feet span the upper and lower levels, while the basement can serve as an independent ADU, home office, or guest quarters. The lower-level entry is now more comfortable, with a wide waiting area protected from the weather overhead.

Upon his first visit to Tasmania, an island south of the Australian mainland, resident David Burns was immediately smitten with its varied, pristine landscape. Working with architecture firm Misho+Associates, he built a self-sustaining, 818-square-foot retreat that would allow him to completely unplug from urban life.

Despite its small footprint, the flexible, multi-purpose space includes bike storage and a niche for storing weights.

Sisal carpet in the two bedrooms adds natural texture. The Anton aluminum wall light is from Volker Haug Studio and the bed is a floating blackbutt timber frame from Create Estate.

“Where we let loose was on the window,” Matt says. “It’s an aluminium window frame, which is bushfire compliant and easy to install, but the way that we detailed it was about hiding the frame so that the eye is drawn into the space.”

A thorough coating of white paint unifies the studio space, while textured rugs and furnishings give it some personality. Ben and Emilio’s latest piece, an aluminum Library Lamp, sits on a credenza behind an Alvar Aalto 544 sofa while a Noguchi pendant hangs overhead.

“Sometimes you go with emotions rather than logic,” says Woodhull founder Caleb Johnson. “I just wanted to renovate the little Pizza Hut look-alike my son told me looked like a blowfish.”

In the primary bedroom, built-in storage is ship-like and not particularly plentiful. “I’d rather live in 850-square-feet by the ocean and see the sunrise every morning than in 3,000-square-feet in the suburbs,” Caleb says.
