One renovation request, homeowner Isaac Hase says, “was having a place to drop your shoes.” At the mudroom end of a run of kitchen cabinets, you’ll find another feature the couple asked for. “We wanted to have a dedicated, visible place for our little stash of cookbooks,” Karoline says.

The home was constructed by prefab company Blue Sky Building Systems, which uses metal as a primary material.

The architects designed all the furnishings in the space, including this granite table and wooden benches. The materials were all cut and assembled on-site by the same team that built the cabin.

The courtyard and open-air kitchen are the home’s hub, where Ernesto’s guests can convene for meals he prepares using local ingredients. “There is an incredible amount of produce in the area. It’s the simple things,” he says. Ellen designed the table and benches, which are surrounded by plantings added to the property.

The kitchen cost roughly totaled $16,000.

Niki and Gustavo splurged on more permanent finishes and budgeted on items, like faucets and shelves, that could be easily upgraded over time.

Though the ceiling looks spectacular, it’s really crafted from standard 2’x2’ boards from Home Depot. LED light strips enhance the impact. “When you explain the method to someone, they’re like, ‘that’s it?!’” Laughs Losada-Amor.

The full kitchen features a breakfast bar and is open to the dining and living areas, making the home perfect for entertaining. The kitchen also overlooks the back garden.

The bathroom has large format tile from Leonardo Ceramica, an Italian compant, a Duravit tub, and brushed brass faucets from Crosswater London.

In the bedroom, the windows received the same Doug fir detailing. The floors are plywood with a clear finish.

In the kitchen, the cabinet boxes are Ikea, fitted with sawn-cut natural oak fronts by Reform, specifically the Surface line from Norm Architects. The matching oak counter is by Portland studio MADE. The pendants are from Schoolhouse Electric, and the counter stools from Design Within Reach.

Much of the building was structurally reinforced, and at the rear, an opening measuring almost 14 feet wide and nine feet tall fits a sliding glass door, to bring in lots of natural light. The second door acts as the main exterior entry. In the dining room, a Saarinen table is surrounded by Eames chairs.
