"We wanted to keep the exterior walls uncluttered, so you can focus on the views, the light, and the air," says Rosa Garneau, the owner of a 650-square-foot co-op in New York's Chelsea neighborhood. Steps lead down to the pool, but the more daring way to enter it—as the architect intended, says Fabian—is by climbing over the primary bedroom’s balcony gate and diving or jumping into the deep end below. “It was one of the first swimming pools in the area,” says Roberto. “The owners were open and friendly, so all the neighbors would come and use it.” Besides providing alternative access to the pool, the bedroom offers an unobstructed view of the surrounding countryside.

A harmonious material palette is offset by playful peekaboo windows on the north-facing wall that frame the natural surroundings rather than the neighbors' windows.

“It’s a bit of an optical illusion depending on what angle you’re looking at it,” says Lee. “It sort of looks rectangular or tilted, but spatially when you’re inside, you’re not getting a flat ceiling.”
