Mature trees wrap the historic home, presenting an idyllic oasis in the heart of Los Angeles.

Located in the heart of D.C.'s Kent neighborhood, the boxy, brick home is wrapped in pink and green panels. Cantilever terraces and extensive glazing foster indoor-outdoor living.

Stairs serve as a subtle partitioner between the seating areas located along the front facade. Custom cabinets and shelving units spanning across the wall date back to the 1960s.

The archways progress throughout the interior, leading residents from one room to the next. A second courtyard is situated between the kitchen/dining area and a staircase that leads to the loft. Teak flooring in the kitchen/dining area contrasts with the lime plaster walls, adding warmth to the space.

In front of the cave entrance is a new semi-curved canopy, to prevent the strong wind from northwestern Mongolia.

The Venice home offers bright living areas spread across more than 2,000 square feet. The front portion of the residence presents dual sitting rooms, which are connected by an open layout.

A new curling staircase accommodates the new layout. Formerly the staircase had been near the front entrance.

To increase the visual space, Herrmann took advantage of the bucolic, hillside setting, and made it a vital part of the interior experience. Every room features at least one large window, each showcasing a different view of the ever-changing landscape: mountains from the living room, woods from the kitchen, and wooded hillsides from the rooms upstairs.

The cozy living area features a refurbished Børge Mogensen chair and a Recover sofa from Bolia. The coffee table was sourced from Jotex.

“Hallways are often seen as dead space, but this one serves a purpose and function,” explains Berg. “It almost pushes you through to the main spaces.”

The light-filled living area is oriented toward the southwest for optimal landscape views.

The cabin is clad in untreated, locally sourced pine that will develop a silvery-gray patina over time.
