Frank retained the closet at left for storage and integrated shelves into the space. Frank found the Peill & Putzler pendant on eBay. The teak coat hooks are from Germany.

A previously empty space became a nature-infused breakfast nook with a built-in bench seat of wood slats painted white. Arthur Umanoff chairs join a live-edge wood slab table. The lines of the Dansk salt and pepper shaker are mirrored in the vintage lamp, with a cardboard shade found at the Long Beach flea market.

The honed marble countertop is a rich charcoal shade, with ultra-fine white veins. Simple black IKEA kitchen cabinets offer ample storage options for the tiny space.

Richly colored koa wood is native to Hawaii and, increasingly rare, can only be harvested from dead trees on public lands.

Underneath vines hanging down from above, a dual-sided entertainment center provides partial separation of the public space. "We designed the dual functioning entertainment/bar fixture to visually separate the living and dining areas while remaining low enough to allow your eye to read the space as one continuous environment," says Melanie.

The wooden staircase is a nod to the original timber cabin.

The new stairs replace a narrow set that was only 30 inches wide. The couple packed storage underneath.
