In the living room, a blanket from Mercredi in Bali now hangs over a sofa from Ikea equipped with Bemz's Sergel Skinny Legs. "When we moved down here, we had this giant empty wall and I was like, 'I know what can go here,'" Rachel recalls. The Beni Ourain rug was sourced on Etsy.

Wu Hanyen and Emily Lindberg bought their Providence, Rhode Island, Victorian in 2021. Since then, they’ve spent almost any free time they have had—often over summer breaks because Wu is a professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design—updating it to their tastes.

This formerly beige Brooklyn home now relishes in a range of blues, greens, and orangey-reds, with terrazzo and tile to spare.

Tile was also saved in the demo to repair the opening around the new door frame.

The single-volume home has been designed to appear to float over the lot on its deck. Ryan upgraded the existing foundation to support its passive design. "Originally, I wanted to make the whole house powered with wood pellets," he says. "But I decided against shoveling pellets in the snow. I'll get weird in a little bit less of a cold climate."

The front pentagon of the cabin contains the main living space; the rear pentagon has two bedrooms and a drying room.

Manzano made the decision to clad the bathroom off the entry hallway in blue, offering a theatrical escape from the rest of the apartment. "This bathroom is very tight, so we thought, let's just do one thing and try to make it a relaxing space."

Jody’s favorite spot is outside on the deck. “I spend most of my time there. We’ve got two braais, and I braai just about every night,” he says, using the Afrikaans word for barbecue. “It’s not about the food for me,” he adds, “It’s about standing around the fire.” The platform sofas were designed by Scott, the dining table is by James Mudge Furniture Studio, and the Hee lounge and dining chairs are by Hay.

A communal washbasin sits outside a pair of bathrooms on the main level. The deep green, seen throughout the loft, started with a joint decision about the kitchen cabinets. “I selected three colors from the laminate catalog, and my kids and my girlfriend, Carmen, voted,” says Gabriele. “They chose petrol bluish green.”

The architects created a Japanese pagoda-style home to take advantage of the location.
