SHED created a streamlined built-in bar and tech storage where the fireplace used to be, and reoriented the living room to face the new fireplace. The new orientation makes it so you can sit on the couch and see the fireplace and Mount Saint Helens (on a clear day) at the same time.

The couple purchased the living room’s H.W. Klein chairs with the house. Another existing piece was the mezzanine’s daybed, designed by Peter Hvidt and Orlando Mølgaard Nielsen. An original floating staircase leads to the mezzanine and then up to the second floor. The open, straight-forward spaces speak to one of Christian’s guiding principles: “Simplicity is the key,” he says.

As part of the restoration the gable roof was replaced for the first time in its 66 year history. Local woodworkers made the chairs in the living room. Claudio and Aranza lined up nine blocks of wood from nearby construction sites to create an ad hoc coffee table. The enclosed portions of the house have massive louvered sliders, also built by local carpenters.
