Jette Egelund, owner of the famed kitchen brand Vipp, builds a summer home that is a master class in Scandinavian coastal living.

The view was pivotal in the design, and the living area features 180-degree views that bring the spectacular seascape into the interior. The soft, neutral palette complements the seascape.

After a fire ravaged the site in rural Portugal, architect Miguel Marcelino designed this country house on its existing stone garden terraces.

The gallery/living area is a flexible room with only two fixed pieces: a 26-foot-long stainless-steel kitchen counter and a long, off-white table that runs along the opposite wall. In the private section behind the wood partition, the bedroom and bathroom are merged. The bed, bathtub, and sink become loose elements within the room, while a shower, walk-in-closet, and toilet are placed at the core.

This thatch-roofed brick cottage in Nieby, Germany, was originally built by tenant farmers or crofters from a nearby estate in the late 1800s. It stands on a small triangular plot of land surrounded by barley fields and faces toward the Geltinger Birk nature reserve. The home’s street-facing facade was preserved and restored with only a minimal, black-steel dormer window belying the more substantial alterations which open onto the private rear yard. A subtle black-framed addition containing an oak-lined living space is tucked under the thatched roof and opens onto a sunken timber terrace while large picture windows are cut into the historic brick volume in areas which had been damaged from the previous additions.

Double-glazed windows are an important feature that help control the building’s interior climate.

Suspended aluminum AIM pendants from FLOS hang in the media/playroom, which includes an Eames Elephant and a clever pocket wall nook for reading and screen time.
