Clairmont Kitchen and Dining

For the bathroom, local studio Dusty Whipple Designs created a custom concrete sink. It sits within waterproof tadelakt plaster walls that run into the shower and around the room.

The side patio, adjacent to the kitchen, offers additional outdoor living space with casual seating and an integrated concrete bench.

The back garden's patio features sliced concrete cylinders that were a byproduct of the facade.

A sheltered open-air lounge provides a prime spot to take in the view.

A veranda connects the corner between two of the three pavilions. According to Fisher's website, the interior courtyard was designed to "protect the residents from harsh wind and sun while providing an alternative view of landscape, which is contemplative, serene, and quiet."

A built-in fire pit and sunken lounge seating offer a comfortable area to sit fireside. The built-in furniture references the interior design, creating a harmony between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The inoperable picture windows were replaced with large sliding glass doors that open to the new seating patio.

Perched below the Griffith Observatory and overlooking Hollywood is a lush lot crowned with four towering olive trees and a 1965 home designed by modernist architect Craig Ellwood. When a young couple purchased the home in 2018, it needed substantial work. For a historic restoration, they called on Woods + Dangaran, a local firm fluent in modernist history. The team completed a meticulous restoration of the home while keeping original components like the linear shape, open plan, and expansive windows. One of the most striking features is the original koi pond (a feature deemed so essential that its preservation was a condition of escrow) that is now crossed via a bridge that leads to a new lap pool—perhaps the biggest intervention on the property.

The backyard features low-water plantings and a cozy fire pit.

For an entry space, the team created wooden cabinetry with perforated metal webbing. The vintage bench is from Mid Century Møbler, and the pendant is by DCW Editions.

Tucked just off the kitchen is a breakfast nook with a round table from CB2, chairs from Arhaus, and an upholstered bench. Hanging overhead is a spherical pendant from Restoration Hardware.

The material palette of this kitchen is calm and muted, using putty coloured cabinet doors, wood grain on the intermediate cabinets, a concrete coloured honed quartz countertop, and light oak flooring throughout.
