Poured-in-place concrete counters complement rift cut white oak flooring and cabinetry in the kitchen.

No matter the model, the ceilings are almost 8.5' tall along the spine of the home, while the walls stand just over 7.5' apart. The white finish applied to the spruce slats lining the interior can be changed to a more natural tone at additional cost.

The main living area is on the second floor in an open double-height space where the ceiling peaks at 15 feet under an angled roof. It contains an airy kitchen/dining area and a living room. A hallway leads to the primary bedroom, and a loft contains a bedroom for their kids. The ground floor has an apartment they rent to local teachers.

Having bought and restored several quirky properties in Washington over the years, including a five-story tree house and a 100-year-old barracks, architect Jason F. McLennan and his wife, artist Tracy McLennan, bought the camp-like retreat in 2020—even though it had no power or running water at the time and is on a secluded island with no ferry service.

“We wanted to make it feel like a surf shack. It was important to us to have a low-key, slow, easy lifestyle,” Kyle says.
