Villa Lena was restored by current owners Lena Evstafieva, Jérôme Hadey, and Lionel Bensemoun from 2007 to 2013, when it opened as a hotel and art foundation.

In this rendering, the space is set up for sleep as the "Rest-Space" version. Wall-mounted rungs become clothing racks, and nightstands stand adjacent to the bed.

The couple's daughter reads in the cozy nook just inside the front door painted in a vibrant blue from Benjamin Moore. Of the storage area below, Fredrik says, "In Sweden, there's always a place to sit and take off your shoes. This is a version of that."

Though the original Minima 1 provides 263 square feet of space, plenty of storage and stowable furniture compensate for the small foot print.

The Woodhull team created a small nook for the home’s wood-burning stove. “Because we wanted the eyes to continually look outward, we didn’t want the wood stove and associated flue to detract from that,” says Morris. “Having it sit inside this nook allows it to still be visible from the living room, but also provides a nice place to sit beside and read.”

“Not every public servant likes to break the rules, but they loved the designs,” says Lim.

A viewing blind lets the family watch for birds without startling any feathered friends away.

With such sharp lines between dark and light, a high quality of craftsmanship in the build-out was key. “There's no tolerances at all,” says Béliveau. From the alignment between the wood on the floor and the tiles, to the oak cabinetry and black lacquered bathroom storage, “Everything had to be dialed in so precisely.”

One of the first Dwell Houses, built by Abodu, was installed at Leslie Scharf’s vineyard home in Healdsburg, California. Norm Architects led the design of the 540-square-foot prefab, which is wrapped in Real Cedar siding.

“I wanted the main focal point to be the outside,” says Castillero. “By minimizing what’s inside, even the slope of the roof makes you turn and look outside.”
