Perched in the Palos Verdes community of Rolling Hills, the 1950 home has wood-wrapped interiors, walls of glass, and unobstructed coastline views.

Set in Portland, Oregon, this dwelling was designed by TVA Architects founder Robert Thompson, who also envisioned the nearby Nike World Headquarters.

Twenty minutes from Marfa, a couple bring a 1914 home back to basics by peeling away faux stone, preserving marbelized tile, and building an addition that’s boxy in the best way.

The central stair landing doubles as a music room. “In many ways this is the center of our home,” says Rick. “The entire house literally circles it.” Hanging on the wall is a 16th-century Tyrolean wood figure of Christ purchased from the original owners.

The tower was limited to nine meters in height (because it’s sunken, it rises to about eight and a half), but the construction style emphasizes its stature. “We did the board-forming top to bottom to give it a sense of verticality,” Yektajo says. “It makes the tower seem way taller.” The concrete’s rough texture and brown pigment complement the adjacent brick building, now a lounge.

“To soften the home, we introduced redwood highlights in the courtyard and at the roof decks.,” says McShane Murnane.

“We studied the Schindler house in Hollywood, which uses a courtyard and glass corners to open up the home to the landscape,” says architect McShane Murnane. “We incorporated sliding doors that pocket into the wall to blur the distinction between the inside and outside.”
