Nick Battaglia lives in an Atlanta apartment where everything is vintage except his underwear. “If it’s not from the forties to the seventies, it does not come into my house unless it’s an emergency,” he says. “I love how extravagant things could be, but at the same time, it goes back to those clean lines and simple designs. Ninety-nine percent of my stuff is true vintage.” He even gave his modern electronics retro touches. “My flat-screen TV is hidden in a 1950s tube television. I pulled out the tube and put the flat-screen inside.”

“We pulled apart one volume and staggered it along the buildable area of the property,” says architect Matthew Ahlberg of Portland firm Barrett Made. The home is clad in unfinished cedar, meant to weather over time.

With an intentionally vertical layout, the house's floors open to each other to create spaces with double-height ceilings.

Minimaliste offers three different finishes for the stone polymer composite floors. The structural insulated panels used for the walls are clad with white-painted engineered wood along the interior. Accent walls (as pictured above) can be added to either end of the unit for $600.

The project was completed entirely remotely. Since then, the husband-and-wife team have moved back to Santiago, where they had met as young architects working for local firms.

The rebuilt “Idea House,” designed by Holly Freres and David Horning of JHL design. The driveway is permeable to encourage good drainage: crushed granite gravel is installed over a stabilization mat. James Hardie exterior siding is painted in Benjamin Moore ‘White Dove,’ with reclaimed wood used for the entry and garage.

The home is currently being rented out to recoup some building costs, and the owners are considering a permanent move after their daughter leaves for college.

The home was constructed by prefab company Blue Sky Building Systems, which uses metal as a primary material.

This painting was just intended to be a placeholder in the mock up, but the homeowners loved it so much they commissioned an identical one.
