Nature, midcentury design, and a less-is-more mentality informed the Fishwick family’s private residence in Suffolk Park.

Rather than go with the expected hardwood treatment, Scenario installed springier vinyl flooring on the home's top level. Its open circulation incorporates areas for study, eating, and lounging—a key fulfillment of the client’s directive for an engaging environment that maximizes contact and interaction.

Protected by an overhang, and floating above ground level, this tertiary space is known in traditional homes as the "engawa." To sustain a unified look throughout, the floor and ceiling are clad in ipe wood.

The limestone-clad volume at the east end of the house extends to the second story, housing Shino and Ken’s master suite, which opens onto the planted roof deck.

The home offers places for solitude and quiet. “Each bedroom was thought of as a separate building,” says the homeowner. “Each bathroom had an outdoor component.” Here, an outdoor shower is a private connection to the outdoors.

A pendant by Doug Johnston, represented by Patrick Parrish, hangs over a custom dining table by Christopher Kurtz. “Working with [Kurtz] was a privilege and beautiful experience,” says the homeowner. “He sent us a video of a stream with eddies in it, and I thought that was so appropriate: you look out at the meadow and the forest, and the lights are kind of like mountains.” The oval shape encourages everyone sitting around it to engage in one conversation.

The two-story artist's studio sits on a small footprint in a residential neighborhood connecting seamlessly with the home.

A glass door on the north side sits opposite a glass window on the south wall that overlooks a birch tree forest. Skylights pull light into the interior. "Even though the artist paints landscapes, she didn't want to be distracted by the beauty of her surroundings while in the studio, which led to the limited apertures," Peterson says.

Inside, wall space is prioritized, with concealed plywood blocking to support hanging work.

The garage is set up like an art gallery.

To revive the original architects’ vision, studioWTA restored a four-foot roof overhang above a wall of La Cantina sliders. The shade helps limit solar gain, while a pool by Evans + Lighter Landscape Architecture provides respite on sweltering summer days.

Upstairs is a serene bedroom with skylights, exposed rafters, and an a bathtub open to the rest of the room.

Every wall has solid plywood behind it, so Monkman can hang his work anywhere. He uses the space as a gallery when collectors or curators visit.

The architecture firm Wonder Inc. designed this 3,300-square-foot home and studio hybrid for artist Kent Monkman in Toronto.

The floor is painted with a reflective silver paint to carry light through the long, narrow space. Long expanses of drywall and magnetic surfaces offer plenty of work and display space.

Linden specified a black stain from Cabot for the house’s exterior. The shade draws on Scandinavian and Japanese building traditions and helps the structure blend into the landscape. Native grasses populate the courtyard.
