Designer Marc Perrotta and travel editor and writer John Newton renovated and expanded a colonial building in Mérida, Mexico, with the help of Jorge Novelo Caamal of Paralelo 20. The house’s pale-green plaster facade gives away little of what awaits inside.

“As far as minimal impact is concerned, the lightweight foundation system is part of it, and we also advocate that our customers do minimal clearing to engage their cabins in the landscape as naturally as possible,” Romanowicz says. “If your build site feels too open because you just cleared one too many trees, stop, and take a break—and maybe plant a bush to make up for it.”

The kitchen cabinetry comes from Interdesign; a rope light from Hoi P'loy offers some humble task lighting.

Fabrikate upholstered the headboard in kvdrat suede, once again choosing green as the dominant shade. Blackbutt veneer was also used for the nightstands.

All paints and oils used throughout the home have low VOCs, and there are rainwater storage tanks and a solar system outside.

The couple chose polished concrete throughout the home to contrast alongside more textural timber. The concrete has thermal heating below it to stay warm in the winter.

“For our personal space, both my husband and I wanted a main bedroom and bathroom that felt like a retreat or an elevated hotel room,” shares Abbie of their new second floor suite.
