The existing Ikea cabinet boxes received new Semihandmade fronts: the DIY Flat Slab painted Benjamin Moore's “Revere Pewter.” The butcher block was replaced with a Ceaserstone Empira White slab, and the wood shelves were preserved, though received new brass brackets. The brass hardware is from Rejuvenation and the pendant is the Pirlo from Tech Lighting. The new zellige tile is from Riad, in the Natural White color.
The floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and windows were the most expensive line item in the renovation. “The house would simply not be the same without them,” says architect Miguel Rivera. “When you are in the living area with the doors open, it creates one large indoor/outdoor space that is simply stunning.” Just beyond the kitchen, a bookcase in the hallway is painted to appear red from one side and gray from the other.
Custom cabinets in a mix of white oak and lacquered paint join Miele appliances and a honed quartz countertop.
The home consists of three cottage-inspired forms that are connected by a more contemporary, flat-roofed central structure. “One of the main challenges was how to bring the competing aesthetics the clients desired—they sought a simple, historical vernacular architecture with a more contemporary aesthetic,” says architect Matthew Erickson.
The sections of flat roof were economical to build, which allowed the use of high-quality wood shingles on the pitched roofs. Stone piers support the south-side trellis, emphasizing the home’s rustic inspiration.
The double-height wall of windows in the living room looks out on the property and was a big draw on their first walk-through.
An extension for a family of four in Melbourne placed the kitchen in a newly constructed garden terrace, maximizing connection to the outdoors. An impressive 30-foot glazed opening spans the length of the extension, allowing a seamless flow between the kitchen and greenery.
The clients bought nineteen acres of land in 2016, and they have been restoring the prairie ever since.

Throughout, Erik and Bill repeated and “wrapped” materials, like the birch plywood near the front entrance, which extends from the bench to the coat rack.
Rectangular blue and white tiles are positioned at an angle in the loft's bathroom, and continue onto the floor and into the hallway, adding a vibrant, playful touch.
The view is the focal point in a bathroom sheathed in charcoal tile and complemented by wood accents.
Although strikingly different from its traditional farmhouse exterior, the interiors reference the outer appearance with an exposed solid granite wall in the living room and exposed roof trusses with black plated junctions that recall the artisanal joinery and construction techniques found in traditional Japanese homes.
In modern bathroom vanities, timber can be used a number of different ways. It’s at its most basic in this simplistic modern bathroom, tied together neatly with matching shelving in the cut-out above.
The entrance opens into a light-filled hall, with a Marcel Wanders chandelier and a Luna console table by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance.
The south-facing, open-plan living is flooded with a gentle mid-afternoon light, reinforcing the warmth of the bright, simple interior.
For the dining area, Hampden designed a bookcase to store the clients’ extensive board game collection and installed sliding doors to connect the space to a new patio.
