Crisp white walls wrap the living spaces, allowing the contrasting wooden accents to pop.

The original layout was very much of the time: a perfect midcentury modern flow, with a closed-off kitchen and a fire put in the floor. “They were cool but impractical spaces,” says Schaer.

The family room is anchored by a Montauk sofa sectional and Jaime Hayon coffee table. The pony chair is by Eero Aarnio and the overhead lighting fixture is from Pet Lamp.

Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap around the main living spaces, framing striking garden views.

The spa-inspired primary bathroom comes with a glass shower and oversized soaking tub. An en suite walk-in closet is also included.

The newly remodeled kitchen, complete with European-style custom cabinets and a large center island, provides an idyllic setting for easy entertaining.

Several original details await in the main living area, including exposed wooden beams and a dramatic double-sided brick fireplace. Sliding glass doors open to the backyard.

Homeowner Isaac Hase installed custom cabinetry from Wisconsin cabinetmaker Woodcraft Specialties.

One renovation request, homeowner Isaac Hase says, “was having a place to drop your shoes.” At the mudroom end of a run of kitchen cabinets, you’ll find another feature the couple asked for. “We wanted to have a dedicated, visible place for our little stash of cookbooks,” Karoline says.

The contractor installed the walnut trim, shelving, and cabinets sides and backing on site.

Though the living room only has large windows on one side, an upper window at left helps create what the clients call double sunrises and sunsets, by creating reflections on the larger windows at right.

The one bedroom-one bath guesthouse has a kitchenette, and also utilizes the same materials as the main house: walnut cabinets, cedar walls, and the tongue and groove ceiling treatment.

The sofa flips into a comfortable queen-sized bed. “We’d rather have the space be mostly available for hanging out, but able to convert when we need to," says David.
