A 580-square-foot terrace complete with outdoor kitchen sits above a new garage. The terrace’s design was inspired in part by New York’s High Line, says Rick, with its varied and immersive plantings, expanded steel-mesh guardrail, and lighting beneath ipe handrail caps.

The yard feels secluded thanks to solid fencing and a buffer of dense greenery. Benches by Angel City Lumber, stacked on stones and all from Molly’s home state of Oregon, create a seating moment to look back at a towering cork oak tree. The pavers and Adirondack chairs are all from OR.CA

A resort-style pool awaits in the backyard, as well as multiple sports courts, a putting green, fire pits, and an outdoor kitchen with a new wood-burning pizza oven.

The home took six years to complete, but the accompanying indigo studio came together in around a year.

Fireclay Tiles line the new pool, beside a fire pit from Lumacast in the same charcoal shade as the house.

The nightstands and dresser are both by Croft House. The overhead light is from Rejuvenation.

“Those living rooms are always a challenge in brownstones, to furnish in a thoughtful way,” says Cuttle, pointing to the narrow dimensions of the room, the low window sills, and abundance of woodwork taking up wall space. A curving Carl Hansen sofa floats in front of the bay window, so as not to block the light and allowing easy sightlines. The chairs and coffee table are from Lawson Fenning and the rug is Jardan.

Flanked by a horseshoe-shaped corridor, the open-air courtyard features dramatic views of Mount Blackmore to the south. In the summer, the mature vegetation shades the glass, and in the winter, the corridor is heated as the courtyard fills with snow.

Polished cement floors ground the lower-level living spaces, including the kitchen and dining area.

Architect Pernilla Wåhlin Norén designed an L-shaped home for her family in Borlange, Sweden. The perpendicular volumes are connected by a pine-shingled section. Plywood interiors complement vintage Alvar Aalto furniture handed down by a relative who worked at an Artek factory nearby.

Though the house was expanded in back to make room for a new bedroom and extended living room, there was still plenty of room for a patio and terraced outdoor space.

The couple rarely needs to turn on an interior electric light until sundown—and even if the ridge skylight extends their mortgage payments a little longer, Amy says “I’m so glad we did it—it’s what makes the house.”

A special finish brings out the grain in the kitchen's walnut cabinetry.
