Downstairs, oak parquet flooring, built-in shelving, and rimu wood cabinetry create a warm work environment.

The home is set into the sloped site, meaning there are windows only on one side of the lower floor. The large windows in the stairway, however, flood the space with natural light. “That's an unusual experience for being below ground,” says Dalesio. “Having that much light spill into that space is particularly special.”

The double-height stair volume and new windows create a much sunnier, open, and functional home.

Marine grade plywood forms the built-in storage spaces, adding a layer of warmth and texture to the restrained interior.

The windows were replaced with new, larger units on the lakeside wall, as well as sliding glass doors, and a slat detail added to the space between the headers and the ceiling. The back wall now has rift-sawn red oak cabinetry and paneling.

A simple, hardscaped back patio is the site of many summer parties. The steps lead down to the firepit, where one feels increasingly embraced by the forest.

A built-in desk makes good use of the small footprint in the study.

In the primary bedroom, privacy glass encloses the stairwell, allowing the owners to switch to translucent glass during the daytime to welcome daylight into the space.

A slat wall in dark walnut adds visual contrast while still allowing daylight to flow through the kitchen pantry on the upper floor and the primary bedroom below.
