Nicole Boone stands in the kitchen of her renovated ranch house in the View Park section of Los Angeles. A finance executive with an eye for art and design, Nicole enlisted the help of Max Kuo and Danielle Wagner of architectural studio AllThatIsSolid to open up the home’s 1920s layout and bring her love of art, color, and nature to the 1,563-square-foot space. Like many ranches in the hilly neighborhood, the house steps gently down the street, creating three interior levels.

Photographer Logan Havens and designer Gustavo Silva restored an adobe in a Tucson neighborhood known for the structures, honoring the home’s original plan while layering in modern touches. In the living room, Logan sits in a lounge chair by Cade Manning Hayes of Dust Architects.

The sofa and side table are from West Elm. The pillow is adorned with a stylized sun that Girard created for the New York restaurant La Fonda del Sol.

Interior designers Melissa Strukel and Corbin Winters and real estate investor Jeff Osborne bought the hotel, along with the town’s mineral lake and a number of other buildings, from Dave and Helen Landman, the longtime owners of most of the properties in Jacumba Hot Springs.

A handsome Mobican dining table and Hay Soft Edge chairs create a gathering space beneath Luminaire Authentik pendants in the dining area.

Hannah and Rami laid out the living area to face the television, which hangs above a restaurant-style metal shelving unit from Webstaurant. The sofa is an Ikea piece the couple had previously, and the rug is from West Elm. The floor lamp is another vintage piece.

The west patio, enclosed by a concrete retaining wall, is designed for outdoor living and overlooks the surrounding forest.

The home's interiors are linked with the landscaping, yet are a spot to showcase personality as well. In the kitchen, navy cabinetry pairs with terrazzo countertops.

When it rains, the water is captured from the rooftops, stored in tanks, and expressed as reflecting pools in the courtyard.

The two-room coastal cabin was in massive disrepair when Nick kicked off the renovation. Rebuilding the windows, doors, framing, and floors, Nick brought his close eye for detail and sought to recreate interior elements in the spirit of the original midcentury design, but with a contemporary edge.

The couple took great care with capturing the best views, but luck played a role, too.
