From a distance, the grass-covered roof disappears into the native landscape.

The home’s dramatic triangular facade is nestled into the natural surroundings and features an expansive entry with a geometric carport.

Architectural designer Sebastian Mariscal and project manager Jeff Svitak created a house in Venice, California, for Michael and Tamami Sylvester. The second floor features this clever storage design—a “hidden space,” as co-design studio refers to it.

Large sliding glass doors allow daylight to fill the living room. Smaller windows are placed in the kitchen area and the sleeping loft. The exterior is clad in heart pine which needs very little up-keep and is known for its strength and hardness.

This 191-square-foot cabin near Vancouver and its glass facades "forces you to engage with the bigger landscape," architect Tom Kundig says, but it seals up tight when its owner is away.
