A standing seam metal roof and charred cedar cladding help keep the maintenance low. “At one point the house was supposed to be white, like the previous structure and the main house,” says Maceda. “But in the middle of the process, I said: ‘Why don’t we go black and just match the shingles of the old garage, since this house is a different thing?’ ”

A wide, stone corridor separates the garage from the living spaces.

“I was trained by modernists, but it’s also really important to me that all the material and everything you touch in a house makes you feel human,” says architect Aya Maceda.

Inside the closets are items like the family’s ski equipment, neatly arranged and always at the ready.
