Cecilia's favorite spot in the house is where she can see the green fireplace, the red room and out through the windows into the nature outside.

The cottage is located on a site just over an hour from Gothenburg and two-and-a-half hours from Oslo, Bohuslän was the ideal location. “We immediately fell in love with the slightly hilly site and its location along a narrow dirt road with cows grazing on the other side,” says Helena. “Until then, I had never thought of building a summer house but when we got the chance, we just had to take it. Especially when my old friend Susanna said she could design a house for us.”

Oak-framed pivot doors fill the existing openings in the facade, which allowed cows to pass through when the building was a working barn 200 years ago.

The bunk room features four extra-long bunk beds, allowing the home to sleep 10.

This living area opposite the bunks features two prominent details in the home's design: terracotta and cork. The floor lamp is by Crate & Barrel, while the ottoman and sofa are from Room and Board.

The sophisticated white motif of this bathroom capitalizes on its natural light.

The new kitchen features ceiling-to-countertop tiles in a grid pattern, which reappears throughout the home. The globe flush mount overhead is from Anthropologie, while the hardware is from Altas Homewares and Alno Hardware.

Houle designed the ofuro tub in the master bath to mesh with the home’s tallowwood wall paneling. The Ikea sink is outfitted with Vola faucets.

In the living room, spare Scandinavian design takes center stage. Hans Wegner’s Wishbone chairs surround an Essay dining table by Cecilie Manz for Fritz Hansen; a mostly wood palette is enhanced by slate-gray brick around the fireplace. The paper lanterns throughout the home are a mixture of classics by Isamu Noguchi alongside those picked up in Japan and France.

With such sharp lines between dark and light, a high quality of craftsmanship in the build-out was key. “There's no tolerances at all,” says Béliveau. From the alignment between the wood on the floor and the tiles, to the oak cabinetry and black lacquered bathroom storage, “Everything had to be dialed in so precisely.”

Inspired by a David Hockney painting, Grant Straghan colors his London home in soothing tones of seafoam and rose.

The kitchen cabinetry is crafted from black-stained American Oak by Pro-Reno Kitchens. The dining table, chairs, and bar stools are made by local wood manufacturer Houtlander. A diamond-shaped skylight is a unique touch.
