The main bathroom uses slabs of travertine contrasted against white subway tiles. “The master bathroom, which is cream and white with brass fixtures, is a favorite space,” says resident Fei Zhong. “We spent a lot of time scouting the right tiles and stone and decided on travertine. It creates a really peaceful space in a house with two small children.”
The existing Ikea cabinet boxes received new Semihandmade fronts: the DIY Flat Slab painted Benjamin Moore's “Revere Pewter.” The butcher block was replaced with a Ceaserstone Empira White slab, and the wood shelves were preserved, though received new brass brackets. The brass hardware is from Rejuvenation and the pendant is the Pirlo from Tech Lighting. The new zellige tile is from Riad, in the Natural White color.
The house was built by Medellín company Edificar Más, whose owner, Verónica Vásquez, took on the complex challenge “with gusto,” says Serge. Other local collaborators include Taller Hombre de Hojalata, which designed and fabricated the metal staircase and mezzanine that doubles as the family library.
Architect Line Solgaard, founder of the eponymous Oslo- and Fredrikstad-based firm, designed a getaway for her family in the place where she grew up. Untreated, exposed concrete pairs with cedar cladding; custom, oak-paneled ceilings; and a glass roof in the center of the home that opens like a sunroof for natural ventilation.
