“Built with a double skin, the exterior comprises a permeable black-stained accoya timber batten screen, camouflaging the house as though an agricultural building. The roof and facades stretch along the same plane, in a simple and clear gesture,” note the architects.

At Alex Strohl and Andrea Dabene’s Nooq House in the Rocky Mountains of northwest Montana, highlights include a suspended fireplace, cathedral ceilings, and expansive windows. "The windows are my favorite feature. I've loved seeing the colors change in the fall, snow in the winter, and bears in the spring," says Andrea.

The bespoke tubs and basins are handmade and finished in light gray Mortex that matches the Pergaminho limestone floors.

All the living spaces and bedrooms enjoy access to outdoor terraces on the north and south sides. The terrace floors are made of bush-hammered Pergaminho limestone to emphasize a seamless indoor/outdoor connection.

The streamlined kitchen cabinetry is accented by Gaggenau appliances and Basaltina stone countertops. Another skylight runs above the kitchen.

“Everything needed to be approachable and simple,” says Hilary. “The house reflects who we are.”

The oak island and cupboards offset the kitchen’s black IKEA cabinetry.

Hilary and her husband, Jimmy, opted for a functional, restrained material palette. In the dining room, Rejuvenation pendants hang above a table by Hedge House and chairs from Hay.

A trapezoidal window in the front door reflects the home’s overall geometry. Next to the door, a custom bench by Simon Hamui, who did all the millwork, provides an easy place to lace up boots before heading out for a hike.

“I don’t paint landscapes when I’m here because I can’t compete with the natural beauty,” says Yael.

Yanki and Yael (pictured), both from Israel, have lived in idyllic locales before—notably a home in Usonia, the forested community planned by Frank Lloyd Wright and his followers—but none, in their estimation, compares to this one. In the kitchen, a Wall Lamp by Workstead hangs above the Terrazzo countertops by Kaza.

The sections of flat roof were economical to build, which allowed the use of high-quality wood shingles on the pitched roofs. Stone piers support the south-side trellis, emphasizing the home’s rustic inspiration.

A local blacksmith fabricated metal elements for the doors, shelves, and light fittings throughout the house.

The living room leads to a terrace with a grill that allows the clients to cook and entertain outside while enjoying the picturesque site.

The home is articulated along the ridge to command the highest point on the property, providing the clients with sweeping views across the rolling farmland.

The light-filled living room features a Kasota limestone fireplace. The slab stones were “fleuri” cut across the grain for a swirl effect, then sandblasted to age.
