The studio was designed without a traditional top plate between the walls and ceiling, to emphasize the floating-roof effect and make the clerestories as unobstructed as possible.

Opposite Tim's workstation is a stand-up drafting table and model-building area, which comes with a view of the back yard.

Sitting beside the couple's home, the Light Ribbon studio complements its lone traditional window with the project's namesake architectural feature: acrylic clerestories.

The mix of plywood helped save on costs, adds visual interest to the space, and serves as an example for Tim’s clients.

The ADU’s bathroom, which doubles as an echo chamber for Brad’s recordings, is covered in American Universal Corp. tile, which was also used for the pool.

In Brad’s music studio, slanted hemlock ceilings enhance the acoustics, which were overseen by George Augspurger of Hollywood’s Sunset Sound fame. The floor is a 12-inch-thick floating concrete slab. A custom work table, designed by Colter and fabricated by Stephan Roggenbuck of Conscious Wood Work and David Wade, sits across from a Steinway grand. The amount of light in the studio is intentionally unorthodox. “I wanted to see the day change and feel a connection to the outside world,” says Brad.

Set behind the couple’s Silver Lake home, the two-story structure has a crisp white board–and–batten exterior.

A highlight of the overhaul is the floor-to-ceiling glass on the north side, which includes a five-panel bifold door. The door opens to the couple’s favorite area of the house, the backyard. The deck is shaded by the cantilevered roof, and Ren planted drought-resistant brush amid the existing oak trees.

When an urban couple decided to build an affordable tiny house outside the city as a retreat from their busy lives, they found a site in the Stockholm archipelago and called on architect David Lookofsky of Lookofsky Architecture.

Lookofsky painted the exterior of the house a bright red tone that pays tribute to the other red, more traditional, houses in the area.

The interior walls of the living room, crafted from unfinished pine plywood, contrast with the cool gray of the concrete floors.

Strategically placed windows and doors open the red-painted pine plywood house to the outdoors and frame views of the landscape.

The clay pantile roof mimics the roof of the existing 19th-century barn structure that still stands on the site.

Bollbacken, as the retreat is named, features an asymmetrical, peaked roof.

Behind the glass facade is the couple’s workshop. The bicycles are prototypes they designed and use as their primary means of transportation. Called Metro-Pedals, they’re built of lightweight aircraft steel and feature interchangeable cargo accessories, low maintenance internal gears, and hydraulic brakes. “They’re the ultimate utility vehicle for the modern metropolis,” says Chris.
