The garden retreat was constructed mostly over weekends and holidays, and when Ed had saved up free time as well as a budget for materials.

Many of the studio’s details match the main home like the pine floors, the recycled slate tiles, and the exposed galvanized wiring conduits.

A water feature and bird bath are built into the studio’s facade.

Much of Ed’s career is dedicated to climate resilient architecture. “Through my work on environmental design, I was keen to see how much we could sort of make this building perform to reach certain environmental sort of standards,” Ed says.

The home’s kitchen features a bold, earthy mix of colors and textures—the quartzite counters, Venetian plaster kitchen hood, Zellige tile backsplash, and natural wood millwork come together to create a warm and inviting space. “The juxtaposition of the old, Moroccan Zellige tile against the new Marvin windows is a really nice design moment,” says Carly.

Both eye-catching and functional, the large servery window is the home’s standout design feature. The space becomes the perfect indoor/outdoor oasis with mature trees around the property providing shade and a screened-in porch that lets air in—but keeps bugs out.

“The servery window is definitely my favorite spot within the home,” says Carly. “It's just something that you don't see very often, and it's a design feature that makes this house very unique.”

One of the couple’s favorite new details is the built-in, L-shaped bookcase in the den.

Concrete ground-floor flooring gives way to Douglas fir stairway treads.

In addition to pendant lights by Moshe's ceramicist-brother, the great room includes a trio of artworks by Adanya's grandfather.

Highly-durable furniture was chosen for the upper deck's sitting area, which routinely hosts sunset parties.

A cement wall feature in the primary bedroom contrasts the green trees that the bed faces.
