After months of waiting for approvals to build a house in Sintra, Portugal, artist Chris Saunders decided to pivot, commissioning a custom tiny home on wheels from architecture studio Madeiguincho. The 200-square-foot house, with its honey-colored wood cladding and contrasting blond wood interior, suits Chris perfectly. “Since moving here I’ve simplified not only my way of living, but also my mentality and work ethic,” he says.

A loster screen mediates the sun’s rays as it filters in to the living areas from the west at sunset, gently illuminating the natural teak wood that in turn balances the home’s dark palette.

A gentle-intervention approach was taken to landscaping the garden under the skilled creative direction of landscape designer studio Florian Wild, whose owner happens to be Rod’s son.

Junipero House is both open to the elements and protected from their unfiltered impacts. All rooms are bestowed with their own private terrace and garden views or access.

"It was our job to hold on to the spirit of these buildings. They worked so well with the site and the views, so the project was really about exercising restraint,” says architect Brian Court. In the guesthouse, Gulassa wired a wisteria branch preserved from the property into a chandelier. The armchair is by Jens Risom and the windows are by Unilux.

In addition to a backyard that is idyllic for entertaining, the home also comes with a two-car garage and a multipurpose room that can be converted into a cinema or gym.
