Pablo designed his family’s home to disrupt as little of the landscape as possible.

Embracing California’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle, they brought the courtyard to life with encaustic Clé Tile, and architectural elements like copper gutters and steel windows. A Vesta Design table is surrounded by PK1 chairs by Poul Kjaerholm. When the doors are open, a breeze flows through the house.

The kitchen flooring is 24” x 24” DalTile Chadwick Charcoal Tile and the wall tile is by Heath Ceramics.

In a nod to the "old meets new

The highlight of Atelier Pierre Louis Gerlier's renovation is the living room wall which discretely hides storage cabinets and features four circular pale-pink, built-ins, one of which serves as a cozy reading nook.

The connection to nature is found throughout the home, with the architects taking every opportunity to connect to outdoor spaces that feel removed from the urban context. The bathrooms, for example, feature ample skylights and look onto planted courtyards.

Sean and Geri both work remotely several days a week, so a home office area was a key part of their design brief. The credenza is vintage Florence Knoll, the desk and chair are both Herman Miller, and the pendant light is George Nelson.

A squadron of Louis Poulsen PH5 lamps hovers in the kitchen. Knoll chairs surround a vintage wood table that Serge bought in Mexico in 2004.

Before: The first iteration of the cottage involved overhauling the existing built-ins in the living room.

Curtis completely overhauled the shelving, changing the shapes of the niches and covering them in micro-cement.

The first phase of Curtis’ redesign was to refinish the shelves in a rich moody color.

Curtis swapped out the flooring for a handmade ceramic tile, and used a rich dark wood for the counter. The existing cabinet bases were repainted.

The owners can get herbs directly from their garden when they cook. Hot Mesh chairs from Blue Dot surround the firepit.

While the new facade is swathed in black stucco, it maintains elements of the original carriage house, which is hidden within the wall. Beyond the grounding stucco base, Healey designed two white volumes to be seen above, teasing the idea that more exists beyond the entry point.

The new stair configuration creates a circulation core. A custom red-cedar screen knits the floors together.

The front garden area is terraced with custom Cor-Ten steel retaining walls with an oxidized patina. The plantings are inspired by the couple’s love for Palm Springs.

The Airstream's meeting area is marked by an Eero Saarinen-designed Tulip table.
