At a mere 600 square feet, the one-bedroom guesthouse maximizes storage space.

Situated at the back of the living area, the kitchen is separated by a large central island. The backsplash of glass tile by Fireclay offers a contrast to the wood cabinetry and black granite.

Carolla sourced the large-format porcelain tiles from San Diego Marble and Tile, same as the sage tiles, alongside a 48-inch Bluestar range.

Grooved paneling to the door faces and island subtly reference the slatted barns that inspired the architecture

"Selecting furniture for this space was a unique experience because, as it is not our primary residence, we wanted to find the right balance between guest-friendly pieces and custom pieces that felt unique and designed with the space in mind," says Tarah. "We split the difference by sourcing some budget-friendly pieces that were lower impact but high function at a reasonable cost."

Leather dining chairs have been paired with a simple white, round table to create spatial and visual balance in the corner nook by the kitchen.

The kitchen features organic materials, such as wood and leather, with a matte-white quartz counter. "We wanted the space to feel uniquely warm and lived-in while achieving some modern aesthetic," says Tarah.

The Lofthouse is built one of the many hills separating it from the couple’s main residence. "Excavation was a challenge, as we wanted to maintain as much of the existing landscape as possible, but needed to clear out trees for the foundation," says Tarah.

Referred to locally as “six-packs”, these 1960s style, suburban walk-up apartments in Richmond Melbourne were reinterpreted by MUSK Architecture Studio who transformed them into versatile and space efficient one and two bedroom units.
