The wood-frame residence and studio are clad in vertical cedar siding—back then, a daring competitor to clapboard—instead of concrete to save costs. The effect is equally seamless, however: “If you drive by it fast enough,” Charles Gwathmey once said, “you still might mistake it for a concrete house.”

Garden Wall Residence, Exterior

The Bigelows’ house throws a nod to its midcentury modern neighbors with its subdivided plan and shallow-pitched roof. The three pavilion layout was also partly in response to tough city restrictions regarding the removal of the various beech and redwood trees on the property. However, the Butler Armsden design team was able to use the profusion of trees to their advantage, creating lines of sight to foliage from almost anywhere in the house. The exterior features locally reclaimed redwood siding that provides another connection with the redwoods on the site. The stucco is painted in custom color-matched Benjamin Moore paint.

The luminous primary bathroom features an Aquatica Purescape 171 Freestanding Tub, along with matte black faucets from Crosswater London. The pendant above the tub is a Gino Sarfatti Model No. 2065 Ceiling Light.

Ushered in by the gently curving retaining walls and grounding concrete garage, entry into the home is a carefully curated progressive experience.

Cheng specified brass schluter inlay between the terrazzo tiles at the floor. "These are installed in an offset Y pattern, which is the first letter of their last name," says the designer.

“My wife’s passion is cooking,” says Will. “We built everything around the kitchen and all the life that happens in that space.”

The wardrobes and bathroom shelves were made to order.

Ridge Mountain Residence was designed to blend into the existing Palm Springs landscape. Cor-Ten steel cladding provides a naturally weathering material, while the concrete structure and flagstone terrace complement the light tones of the surrounding mountains.
