In fall, the color of this backyard in Charlottesville, Virginia, changes daily with the foliage. Elizabeth Birdsall marvels how new outdoor spaces on her property, like a patio furnished with upholstered seating from Gloster, make enjoying the woods an easy experience: “It’s like comfortable camping, all the time.”

Texan influences can be found in various pieces next to the bathroom door, including a cow hide rug, longhorns haning on the wall, a metal roadside cactus, and an art piece by Houston-based artist, Dan Allison.

The Shinomotos have filled their Southern California home with furniture by Taku and pieces by some of the artists and craftspeople whose work they also showcase at their Tortoise shops and showroom. The couple worked with architectural designer Ken Tanaka to remodel the house, once a cramped, two-bedroom rental. The park includes a greenhouse embedded with a tile-lined passageway that leads to a massive atrium with a water feature and a stained-glass ceiling.
