The renovated kitchen is open, airy, and connected to the rest of the main level. Plum Projects used Bedrosians Magnifica Luxe polished white porcelain for the island, countertops, and backsplash. The black upper cabinets are made from Richlite: a durable, sustainable material made from recycled paper.

From its locally quarried stone foundation to its zinc-coated copper roof, the cottage was inspired by its surroundings. “We talked a lot with our client about what the materiality would be,” says architect Karen Stonely, who, citing the organic style of Bar Harbor architect Robert Patterson, designed the structure with wood rather than drywall.

Throughout the cabin, custom built-ins, like a folding table by Bar Harbor woodworker Rick Bradbury, pack maximum utility into a streamlined package.

Douglas fir-framed windows by Dynamic Architectural Windows & Doors offer layered indoor-outdoor views.

The coffee table is from Baxter & Liebchen and the custom felt rug is by Karkula; built-in daybeds by woodworker Rick Bradbury feature cushions by Chelsea Workroom upholstered in vintage Maharam fabric and leather.

The sofa in the family room was designed by Helgerson with Magnifique fabric by Kravet. The 265 Wall Lamp is by Paolo Rizzatto for Flos, and the pine coffee table is from The Good Mod, a local shop in Portland.

After: Existing timber doors and windows were retained and painted white.

The hallway on the second storey leads to the children's bedrooms on one end that featured dark door and window frames.

The deep addition has pushed the focus of the garden further back towards the forest, which Robi and Christine enjoy. They try to find time to sit in the garden every day.

"Robi and Christine lived in house for ten years before renovations, and gave us great information on how daylight enters the house," says Cerrone. In the quest to maximize natural light, the team felt lucky that the neighbors on one side approved of a row of high clerestory windows.

The bathroom in every Adobu model (two in the Abodu Two+) can be upgraded to include chrome fixtures for $1k and a curbless shower pan for just over $5k.

Simple oak furnishings from Habitat blend with the birch millwork and bamboo floor. The cabinetry, benches, and doors were built by Olivier, who studied design before becoming a filmmaker.

The homeowners love that their secret garden is now an extensions of their living space.

"On our first site visit, the client showed us a large Welsh dresser which was used for display. While we couldn’t find room for it in the lower ground floor, we did manage to reinterpret it’s functionality as a wall of oak shelving used for storage and display.

The glass house interior features a timber terrazzo floor made from recycled waste wood for a sense of playfulness, warmth, and harmony with the oak frame.
