After renting in San Francisco for a decade, DIY couple Molly Fiffer and Jeff Waldman bought 10 acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where the pair and their friends built a cabin compound complete with sheds, tree decks, a pavilion, a wood-fired hot tub, an outhouse, and an outdoor shower. The cabin is made from locally sourced, rough-sawn redwood, which the couple stained with nontoxic Eco Wood Treatment to give the panels an aged appearance and a dark patina.
Salt Lake City–based Modal’s prefabricated accessory dwelling units are built off-site and then delivered completely assembled and ready to install with nine-foot-high ceilings, built-in furniture, bed frames with integrated storage, and fully-equipped kitchens. The homes are designed to comply with current residential building codes, and pricing starts at $98,000.
Zip Kit Homes, a division of Timberhawk Inc., designs and builds modular homes at a competitive price using efficient production processes. The Cedar City–based company offers two different types of prefab homes: small, 12' x 50' modular single-family units that can be joined together; and panelized kit homes which are precision-built in a factory and then quickly assembled on-site.
