The kitchen is customized for Roberta, an avid cook. Easy-to-reach pots hang from a custom rack by Bjørn Design. Its hooks can be lengthened if she has to reach from a wheelchair someday; a lowered counter where she likes to work, read, and play cards can accommodate a wheelchair, should she need one. Oak veneers for the ceilings, floors, and cabinetry were a splurge, but Roberta loves their warmth and texture.

The family's airy, inviting living room sits just off the open kitchen.

The home’s interior is accented with warm, natural materials ranging from textiles to wood and terra-cotta.

The studio cantilevers over a steep hillside and provides a tree house effect.

The board-form concrete of the support helps to frame the built-in shelving.

The main bedroom and ensuite feels like a retreat with warm, earthy colours and coastal views.

The new primary bathroom includes dramatic silver soapstone countertops and a wall finished in dark glass tile.

Beaulieu made the closets a bit deeper so as to make the storage capabilities more comprehensive.

"Our main goal for this project was to persevere and embrace the surroundings," Pablo notes, "so we took advantage of the topography and located the private areas of the homes 'underneath' so they disappear."

“MA03 Library House was designed to meet the requirements of a ceramicist and a lawyer in need of a home capable of holding their extensive book collection as well as providing them with spaces for work and creative activity,” say Fria Folket, the architect behind this cabin in Sweden.

The nearly 650-square-foot cabin has just enough interior space for a relaxed weekend getaway.

The unit is positioned about 30 feet away from the house, which is far away enough that you can’t hear the kids if they’re being loud, says Sarah. (Her son recently hosted a karaoke party for 10 friends in the studio but it wasn’t disruptive, she says.)

The double-height living space is anchored by a wood-burning stove by Lopi in the corner. The large east-facing window on the far wall floods the room with magical morning light. All the windows and doors are by Quantum.

Owner Stacey Hill was instantly drawn to this shipping container’s existing blue color and chose to leave it unchanged. Architect Jim Poteet added floor-to-ceiling sliding doors to allow light in, as well as a cantilevered overhang to shade a window on the left side, which houses a small garden storage area.

The house retained its same basic form in front, part of a lush West Seattle neighborhood.
