Sea Captains’ Row, located in Hyannis, Massachusetts, was built using modular building techniques, but was, according to Union Studio Architects, meant to capture “the character and details of the adjacent historic row of houses that originally belonged to mid-1800s sea captains.”

At the end of 50 years, the planned community of Tornagrain, in the Scottish Highlands, is expected to be made up of 5000 homes.

The custom dining table—which was made by a local artisan—is located in front of west-facing windows that frame the sunset in the evenings. The table can be easily moved inside or out depending on the weather.

DiNiord collaborated with craftsman Ken Hood to design the concrete bench with firewood storage and detachable wood back. Douglas fir columns along the walkway creates a colonnade. The mono-sloped roof is a nod to the long roofline of the original house that stood on the property. “Reducing the angles also reflects the strictness to budget,” the wife says.

The innagural retreat opened in 2021 on the coast of Helsinki, Finland. The project encompasses four rentable cabins that can each accommodate up to three guests.

The yellow door is the house's official entrance, but the family naturally gravitates to the movable glass walls.
