"We couldn't put installation where we wanted to expose the joists, so we had to put it on the roof. That actually helped with waterproofing—the original roof was likely our biggest challenge,

The concrete foundation was poured on top of a rock outcropping, so that the house would feel like part of the natural features of the site.

Stormwater is captured and retained on site. Runoff flowers from a cantilevered gutter, to a vegetated bio-retention area, and finally into the existing retention pond.

A wall between the dining area and kitchen was removed, creating more of a great room-like space. The ceiling plane was given a curve to match the new curved kitchen counter.

Although the width of the stairway walls didn't change, new wood treads and a wider extension at the bottom of the space help make it feel both brighter and less confining.

The home features floor-to-ceiling windows and doors from the Marvin Ultimate collection as well as a combination of smaller casements and awnings. “It breaks up those large openings and gives them more of a human scale when you’re opening and closing the windows,” explains architect Nate Dalesio. The vintage bar stools seen here are by Alvar Aalto.

The ground floor is where the clients spend most of their time. The main living space opens up to the waterfront via sliding glass doors, and the floors are burnished concrete to complement the board-formed walls.

The home’s brick facade balances solidity with openness, framing lush gardens and the natural slopes of Paraty’s Costa Verde.

The home is meant to be a gathering place for friends and family, making it so groups of three to 20 can feel at home. A long banquet of seats makes that possible, too.

So Melanie Maher could access the kitchen, Mikiten created a station with a KitchenAid cooktop, a refrigerator and freezer drawers from U-Line, and a Sharp drawer microwave. He also adjusted the height of the PaperStone counter to allow Melanie to roll her chair underneath.
