Unknown Works updated the space with floor-to-ceiling glazing and concrete floors that run from the interior to a tranquil backyard escape.

Expansive glazing allows plenty of natural light from the rear garden to sweep throughout the interiors.

The picture wall is adorned with images collected from family, colleagues, and estate sales. ”I kill plants, so cacti are our friends,” Peter says of the succulents along the low table behind the Design Within Reach sofa, just over which an Established & Sons Font clock keeps time.

The red rock of the fireplace façade became smooth drywall with an elongated concrete hearth. “We fireproofed it with a layer of fireproofing between the actual fire insert and the outside walls,” notes Mattingly of the application. The rug is the Savannah from Armadillo, topped with a Cierre Aida Sectional from KCC, and a Little Petra Lounge Chair by &Tradition. The lighting is Noguchi, and casts a soft glow at night.

The couple are also design lovers, particularly when it comes to vintage furniture. The study is furnished with a Saarinen Table by Knoll and Thonet Cantilever Chairs.

The interior CLT surfaces are treated with a soapy wax that protects the wood and also reflects more light to create a more luminous space.

USM collaborated with Chicago artist Noel Mercado on a run of three pieces in four colorways, in addition to a merch lineup that included vests, a hat, and a hoodie.

The basement-level family room connects with a guest bedroom that features a painting by Marleigh Culver.

Remo Kommnick and Emi Moore wanted a minimalist home that could blend with its site in rural Virginia. “We had to keep things really simple,” says architect Patrick Farley. The cabin is clad in stained western red cedar, and its form is inspired by shelters on the nearby Appalachian Trail.

This 1,200-square-foot cabin was designed as a forest retreat for a family of writers and producers.

“The massing of the residence pushes in and out, shifting in response to site conditions at each level of the uniquely situated through-lot, resulting in a continuous flow that both extends to and draws in the immediate environment,” notes the firm.

The media room does triple duty as an office, home theater, and guest room when the Murphy bed is pulled down. “The vibes are right in the morning for writing,” says the wife, “and at night for movies.” The husband adds, “We really intentionally only wanted a TV to exist in the media space.”

A stainless steel backsplash in the kitchen matches appliances from Sub-Zero and Miele.
