Faced with a number of challenges, including the protection of a cluster of centuries-old olive trees, 51-1 Arquitectos devised an unusual plan for a house in Lima, Peru. In a twist on Tudor Revival, one of only a few styles permitted in the neighborhood they raised the living area above a terrace. “The layout was all about how to fit the program within the very particular limitations of this site,” says architect César Becerra.

A built-in stainless steel sink with a commercial-grade faucet and sprayer mounted in the backsplash speeds up dishwashing duty.

The original home was built in 1925 as one of eight units. Today, it’s a contemporary 3-bed, 3-bath single-family residence.

The property also includes a similarly designed guest house, which can easily be used for short-term rentals or as an artist's retreat.

At the ranch of Nancy and Tony Lilly in the hills of Sonoma, an area plagued by drought and fires, landscape designer John Greenlee struck a balance between beauty and resiliency with a water-wise meadow-garden.

The House features a seating area and fire pit by the main entrance. "It’s a great way to experience the peace and serenity of the outdoors," says Tarah.

The house is oriented north-south, with the broad side of the structure facing east-west. This guarantees not only gorgeous views of the sunset, but also minimizes wind exposure.

“We wanted to tackle the dream and challenge of designing our own house and create a space that would get us close to nature,” Alessandro says.

Modern Barns is a 4,300-square-foot dwelling consisting of a series of timber volumes with pitched roofs.
