Pam and Frank recently tasked Light and Air Architecture with remodeling this loft in New York City to get better natural light. “That’s exactly what we were looking for, is light and air,” says Frank.

The organic placement of the windows echoes the knots on the trunks of the surrounding trees.

The heavy guardrail on the mezzanine ties into the black kitchen cabinets below.

The double-height ceiling makes the living room of this compact cabin feel downright grand.

Cle tiles, a Duravit sink, and Vola fixtures were used in one of three bathrooms.

The new staircase to the bunk room also has a privacy screen made of a bookcase with storage.

The new lower level makes space for guests and the owners' two children to have privacy.

The drop ceiling was removed to make the kitchen feel larger, and Troy RLM kitchen lights were installed above it.

The tub sold the downstairs tenants on the unit.

The Lofthouse is built one of the many hills separating it from the couple’s main residence. "Excavation was a challenge, as we wanted to maintain as much of the existing landscape as possible, but needed to clear out trees for the foundation," says Tarah.

The couple also redid the deck, making it an ideal place to lounge and entertain.

The original brown linoleum in the kitchen and living room, the unattractive wood flooring in the main bedroom, and the bright blue plywood flooring in the guest bedroom gave way to whitewashed plywood, which will eventually be covered with true hardwood flooring.

This artfully minimalist Australian kitchen combines concrete, oak, steel, and prefabricated panels with a substantial marble countertop and backsplash.

The pine door leads to the bathroom.

“Everything is located around the perimeter to create as much usable space as possible,” says de la Vega. The firm designed the banquette to do double duty as a storage trunk, and the wall hides custom-made closets with holes for hanging paintings and models. The vintage chairs are by Eero Aarnio for Asko.

“This was a former painting workshop, so it has lots of light but no insulation. The roof structure was maintained as is, but we painted it white and covered it with dark natural cork,” shares de la Vega. The pine was all sourced locally from the north of Spain, and the door leads to the couple’s bedroom.

A dining nook is framed by timber beams running above the space. The sunny corner is illuminated by an additional grouping of clerestory windows.

In the renovated master bathroom the couple opted for a natural wood vanity to complement the beams overhead. A cool white color palette creates a serene atmosphere.
