The clients wanted a house that could offer fantastic views of the landscape from every room—including the bathroom—whilst protecting them from the worst of the Cairngorms weather.

Homeowner and interior designer Julie Crosby worked with developer Soheil Nakhshab to transform a rundown midcentury property in the coastal Del Mar neighborhood of San Diego. The 5,400-square-foot, four-bedroom residence incorporates a natural palette and tall windows.

A decidedly sculptured hall.

Using the original loading bay as a structural base, Adjaye designed a lap pool that runs nearly the full length of the home. A slit window along one wall filters light in from the adjacent principal bedroom.

Studio MacLean worked with local studio Eley Kishimoto to design the bespoke cabinetry in the kitchen, which plays up the vibrant yellow hues while also creating a larger sense of space.

While the owners really liked the idea of shou sugi ban, they opted for a more cost-effective black stain. The random-width, reverse board-and-batten siding reflects the wabi-sabi concept. “The builder said the math for the random siding was torturous,” the wife said. “We didn’t know how hard it was to make things look simple.” DeNiord planted hay-scented fern and lowbush blueberry sod around the house. “We didn't want any side of the house to feel unconsidered,” he says. As for the local boulders he placed around the house and terrace, he says, “They give the feeling that the house grew up around the outcroppings.”
