Mike McConkey, a superintendent for a general contractor, tasked Chris Bittner of OBR Architecture with designing an environmentally sensitive home for he and his wife in San Diego County. Utilizing three shipping containers and a bevy of cost-effective appliances, they managed to limit the budget to $160,000.

Trejos positioned the containers about 60 centimeters above the ground floor, which gives the main gallery and workspace a bit of a sunken feel. The double-level main room offers a spacious interior, perfect for large events and easily altered so it can be utilized as a photo studio for indoor shoots.

The walls are lined with shiplap siding. The lights are recessed LEDs.

Built-in bookshelves and a brick fireplace complement the living room’s wood-paneled walls.

The main dining area features floor-to-ceiling French doors which lead to an adjacent patio.

Double glazed windows facing south provide both insulation and adequate heat gain for the cooler climate of the city's higher altitude.

Engineered for energy efficiency, the Koto cabins are equipped with high-performance insulation and cane be fitted with renewable energy systems such as solar panels and biomass stoves.

Koto clad the exteriors and decking with IRO timber, a heat-engineered timber that’s UV stable, HVOC-free and mimics the appearance of Shou Sugi Ban.

The Ki cabins feature an open-plan living, dining and kitchen space that seamlessly connect to the outdoors via full-height glazed doors that fold back to completely open up one facade to the lake.

While each aspect of the Falcon House is customizable, in the case of this private home, the moody bathroom contrasts with the rest of the light interiors.

The Holiday Home's bright and airy sculptural design features a black exterior paired against a warm and welcoming natural wood interior.

Holiday Home has a very spacious feeling despite its relatively compact volume.

Though not a home itself, the welcome center is one of several designs ready for printing by ICON. The neighborhood will get at least six printed homes by the end of this year, although Graham of Mobile Loaves & Fishes is hoping for more.

Icon released renderings for a neighborhood of 100 3D-printed homes north of Austin, Texas, with global architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and homebuilder Lennar in 2021.
