The home’s kitchen marries a wood-slatted ceiling and wood cabinets with marble counter and surround.

In addition to adding visual intrigue, the slatted wood facade is actually quite functional. It screens direct sunlight in order to create a cooler, more pleasant indoor environment.

The house is oriented north-south, with the broad side of the structure facing east-west. This guarantees not only gorgeous views of the sunset, but also minimizes wind exposure.

“The design for the house emerged from walking the property. We imagined that as we climbed up from the beach, we’d see little peeks of our home from behind the trees,” says Brad Horn, architect and resident.

The dark-stained exterior cladding stands in contrast to the light wood decking and warm interiors.

The expansive decks and patios enable indoor/outdoor living and easy entertaining.

Deck Chair by BDDW, $5,880 Made at BDDW's Philadelphia workshop, this generously proprortioned chair is made from a leather sling seat, metal, frame, and shearling head cushion. A small circular tray begs for an ice-cold drink (beer coozie not included).

“The layout and openings allow ample flow to the exterior, and paths and decks have been developed to ‘flatten’ the sloping site enough to create generous outdoor gathering areas,” Herrin says. “These areas take into account sunlight at different times of day as well as protection from prevailing wind,” he adds. One-by-six-foot ipe planks comprise the decking, and hemlock end grain by the Oregon Lumber Company was installed indoors.

Those costs were partially recouped by using knotted pine planks for the exterior.

A cantilevered cabin designed by R D Gentzler blends into the forest, even as it hovers above a 20-foot drop-off. Its south face is almost entirely glass, but a roof canopy limits solar gain.
