Planned for the highly walkable Westlake Neighborhood, Hope on Alvarado is a transitional development for the homeless that’s built from shipping containers. It will offer built-in support services for the newly sheltered. KTGY hopes the project will serve as a cost-effective model for affordable housing in other urbanized west coast cities.

The series of pitched white buildings was inspired by the work of architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen. “The shell of the house is a very simple form,” says Matthew Ford, “no turns or intersecting roof sections. This allowed me to use solid but inexpensive framing and roofing crews. We are always looking for the point where simplicity and luxury meet.”

The office is clad almost entirely in cork, which complements the oak that defines the scheme. “I want to cover everything in cork—there’s so much potential!” says interior designer Emily Lindberg.

Expansive skylights stretch across the central atrium, ushering ample natural light inside.
