After trying dozens of colors, LeBlanc says, they settled on basic black for the exterior as a way to best marry the building with its forest surroundings, which include 30-foot-high western red cedar trees. The pool is original; but the deck, once made of concrete, has been reclad in granite to match the old retaining wall.

A 14-foot-wide opening at the rear of the house contributes, along with the concrete flooring, to an almost seamless transition from indoors to the patio. A spate of mid-century furnishings includes chairs by Hans Wegner and Poul Kjærholm and an Achille Castiglioni Arco lamp.

Unpainted plywood wraps all around the living areas to give the interior "a warmth and texture that interacts beautifully with the external Blackbutt timber," says Jackson. "It has a robust , durable, and tactile quality that sits well with the internal concrete floors."

To avoid excavating the land, Pang and Boyle designed a structural platform to keep the cabin level.

Andrew Simpson Architects built the floors, walls, stairs, and cabinetry out of hoop pine plywood. Plywood panels salvaged from the client’s former art installation were used to line the ceiling.

A blue-green "object" joins the kitchen, pantry, powder room, and coat closet together, providing extensive storage for the family and a focal point for the living bar.
